Join Us at Our April Forum – Making History: The Landmarks Preservation Commission at 60

This month marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Landmarks Law and the creation of LPC. To celebrate, LPC and the New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation (NYLPF) are co-hosting a special forum on April 24th exploring how the Landmarks Preservation Commission practices safeguard the city’s historic resources while advancing citywide goals, including economic growth, housing, and placemaking. Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development, and Workforce Adolfo Carrión, Jr. and Department of City Planning (DCP) Director Dan Garodnick will be featured speakers at the event.

The first panel discussion will focus on the urgent need to increase New York City’s housing supply and explore examples of how those goals are being realized in landmark buildings, while the second panel will highlight innovative design in a historic context and delves into notable examples from recent work at New York City landmark buildings and sites.

New Story Map Celebrating LPC’s 60th Anniversary

On April 17th, LPC’s anniversary celebrations kicked off with the launch an updated interactive story map featuring highlights from the Commission's work over the past six decades, including legal milestones related to preservation in New York City, plus notable landmark designations and innovative design at landmark sites approved by LPC throughout the years.

The new story map, Sixty Years of LPC, is available on LPC’s website.

LPC's New Offices at 253 Broadway

LPC has moved! On April 7th, we moved into our new offices at 253 Broadway; on April 8th, we welcomed applicants and the public into our new 2nd floor hearing room for the first public hearing in our new location. Please note that all future public hearings will be held in this new location.

LPC's new public hearing room offers an updated sound system and video technology for an improved in-person and virtual experience, an assistive listening system for enhanced accessibility, spacious and bright audience seating, and a comfortable waiting area with closed-feed video of the proceedings.

Connecting with Landmark Property Owners in Sunset Park

It was a packed house at Brooklyn Public Library’s Sunset Park branch on April 3rd, as LPC and the New York Landmarks Conservancy (NYLC) held an info session with property owners in the Central Sunset Park, Sunset Park North, Sunset Park South & Sunset Park 50th Street Historic Districts, answering questions from attendees and sharing information on the LPC permit process, NYLC loan opportunities, and LPC’s Historic Preservation Grant Program (HPGP). Our thanks to New York City Council Member Alexa Avilés and Brooklyn Community Board 7 for hosting this great event.

Talking to Students About Preservation Careers

On April 9th, LPC's Senior Landmarks Preservationist Caroline Pasion was a guest speaker at Manhattan's Stephen T. Mather Building Arts & Craftsmanship High School's career day, talking about LPC's work and discussing her experiences working in the field of preservation. The students were engaged, insightful, and asked fantastic questions — our thanks to Mather's leadership team for inviting us once again to be part of this fantastic event.

This administration works every day to create a more affordable city for every New Yorker, and here at LPC, one important way we're helping build a more affordable city is through our Historic Preservation Grant Program (HPGP), which offers grants ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 primarily for façade restoration to not-for-profit organizations and income-eligible owners of buildings located in historic districts, or which are designated individual landmarks. It's an important program for many landmark building owners considering work on their properties – and also happens to be one of the topics LPC staff discussed during the Sunset Park info session mentioned earlier in this newsletter.
