Workforce Connect
DYCD is pleased to announce the rebranding of our funded workforce development initiatives as Workforce Connect. Workforce Connect coordinates NYC’s workforce development programs by assisting youth between the ages of 14 and 24 to gain work experience and further their education. Within Workforce Connect, three programs have been rebranded: Learn & Earn (formerly In-School Youth or ISY), Train & Earn (formerly Out-of-School Youth or OSY) and Intern & Earn (formerly the Young Adult Internship Program or YAIP).

Senior Programs at DYCD
National Senior Citizens Day is on August 21, 2018 and recognizes contributions senior citizens make in communities across the United States. DYCD recognizes the needs of our City seniors and therefore funds free senior programs throughout the five boroughs.
Services for the older adult population foster healthy physical, psychological and social well-being for persons aged 60 and older. Programs provide a range of services such as social and recreational activities; intergenerational activities; exercise and nutrition; and access to health insurance, medical assistance and community services.
There are 29 senior programs funded by DYCD across New York City serving 3,500 families annually. To find a program near you, please visit our Discover DYCD site or call our Youth Connect hotline at 1-800-246-4646.
Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship
The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. With the 30th class in 2018, the Foundation has provided over 6,000 Coca-Cola Scholars with more than $66 million in educational support. 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship. The application will reopen in early August 2018 for students who will be graduating in the 2018-2019 academic school year. Please visit their website for more info.
UNCF Scholarships
UNCF has helped more than 450,000 students earn their college degrees since its founding. UNCF is the nation’s largest private scholarship provider to minority group members. Each year, they award more than $100 million in scholarships to more than 10,000 students at more than 1,100 schools across the country, including our prestigious network of 37 HBCUs. High School Literacy Leader
Do you need an ELA elective credit for graduation? Do you want to develop real-world skills through a paid mentoring and tutoring position? Fantastic! High School Literacy Leaders wants you. If you are in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade and you are enrolled in high school in New York City, you can become a Literacy Leader this fall. From September to January, you will meet twice a week after school to learn how to become a great reading tutor while earning one ELA elective credit through the Department of Education. After you successfully complete the fall internship, you can then become a paid employee of the New York Public Library. Visit their website for application and library locations.

Youthbuild
At YouthBuild programs in the United States and across the globe, low-income young people learn construction skills through building affordable housing for homeless and low-income people in their neighborhoods and other community assets such as schools, playgrounds, and community centers. For unemployed young people who left high school without a diploma, YouthBuild is an opportunity to reclaim their educations, gain the skills they need for employment, and become leaders in their communities.
Volunteer at Habitat NYC
Show love for NYC at any age. If you’re a young New Yorker, you’ve got great potential as an advocate for Habitat NYC. Kids ages 5-14, or “Little Builders,” can take part in fun activities that teach kids the importance of giving back. Individuals 14 and up are eligible to volunteer at A Brush with Kindness (BWK) project sites. Individuals 16 and up can also volunteer on construction and preservation sites. Groups of volunteers under 18 just need a 1:5 “chaperone to volunteer” ratio (and those under 18 must have a waiver to participate). Visit their website to learn more.

Outdoor Movies in NYC
Since 1992, when HBO first started showing films in Bryant Park, free movie screenings have been an annual summertime tradition in the City. Hollywood classics, current blockbusters and indie gems are screened at outdoor venues throughout the five boroughs, with stunning backdrops like the Manhattan skyline (Brooklyn Bridge Park Movies with a View) and the Coney Island Cyclone (Coney Island Flicks on the Beach). FarmHouse Family Day
Celebrate the summer at the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum for their Free Family Days & Farmers Market! Drop-in between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on August 18, for outdoor colonial games, seasonal activities, scavenger hunts and more!
NYC Public Beaches Citywide
NYC Parks maintains 14 miles of beaches, which open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. Closed sections are marked with signs and/or red flags. Beach season has been extended to September 10. Visit their website to find NYC beach locations.
Weekend Walks 2018
Weekend Walks are multi-block, multi-day events on commercial corridors that promote the use of streets as public space. Community based organizations apply to close commercial streets and provide programming that highlights local businesses and New York City’s unique neighborhoods. There are 125+ Weekend Walk events between April and December 2018 in all five boroughs. Check out their website see if one is in your neighborhood.
