Site Overview

What Are We Planning for the Site?

The NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) is planning for development of affordable housing and community amenities on a portion of 388 Hudson Street (the Hudson Street Housing Site) located in the Hudson Square neighborhood of Manhattan. HPD does this planning in collaboration with the community, so keep reading to find out how to get involved!

The Hudson Street Housing Site is a City-owned property. The development of City-owned land for affordable housing is initiated through a competitive process called a Request for Proposals (RFP) that asks developers to respond to a set of goals and guidelines for the site that reflect community priorities.

About the Site

The Hudson Street Housing Site is located on Hudson Street between West Houston Street and Clarkson Street in the Hudson Square neighborhood of Manhattan. The Housing Site is on the northern portion of the undeveloped City-owned lot totaling approximately 13,622 SF. The southern portion of the lot hosts NYC Department of Environmental Protection infrastructure and is currently undergoing a separate engagement and design process for its future use as a public open space with NYC Parks. The Housing Site sits adjacent to a school building shared by H.S M560 City-As-School and P.S. M721 Manhattan Occupational Training Center to the East, James J. Walker Park to the North, a nine-story commercial and office building to the West, and a 12-story commercial and office building to the South.

The Housing Site is surrounded by a mix of uses including low and medium density residential buildings, commercial and office buildings, community facilities, and public open space. Hudson Street is a commercial corridor with clusters of restaurants, grocery stores, and other retail to the North and South of the Housing Site. There are additional commercial amenities along 7th Avenue/Varick Street just to the East. The Housing Site also has access to several transit services including more than five bus lines, eight subway lines, and PATH trains.
