On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck the New York City area causing destruction and loss of lives. Never before had the city experienced a storm of such magnitude and force. This article features some resources in the City Hall Library collection about weather and weather preparation.

Report of Damage to the City’s Parks and Trees by the Recent Hurricane was published by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation in 1938. The report features photos of damage caused to the parks and trees of New York City by the destructive hurricane of 1938. Photos are organized by borough. Financial statistics are also included.

The New York State Coastal Erosion Task Force published its Final Report in 1994. Volume One analyzes issues concerning disaster preparation such as setting aside funding to repair extensive erosion, establishing evacuation routes and coordination among governmental and private agencies. Volume Two discusses conservation and restoration of shore areas particularly communities and public beaches.

Preliminary View of the City’s Response to the December 2010 Blizzard was prepared by the Mayor’s Office of Operations in January 2011. Suggestions for future change include amending the process for declaring a state of emergency, improving accountability and better utilization of private resources.

New York City Office of Emergency Management has published several Ready New York guides. These offer information on being prepared for bad weather, power failures and other types of emergencies. There are also guides for senior citizens, the disabled and businesses.

Local Climatological Data New York, Central Park report from the National Climatic Data Center in North Carolina provides monthly and yearly data on temperatures, precipitation, wind speeds, etc. Holdings are from 1973 to 1999.
