Flu Immunizations

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious viral respiratory infection that can cause illness ranging from mild to severe. The CDC estimates that every year in the United States, about 5 to 20 percent of the population gets the flu, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and about 36,000 people die from the flu.

Influenza and pneumonia constitute the third-leading cause of death in New York City, following heart disease and cancer, killing more than 2,000 New Yorkers every year. While influenza is not life-threatening for everyone, it poses moderate to severe risks to the infirm, pregnant women, the young, and the elderly. That's why it is so critical that these people and all those around them get vaccinated. Taking the flu vaccine can help prevent getting the flu or lessen its severity. HHC encourages all New Yorkers to get their flu shots each fall or winter, especially those who are most susceptible to the flu and its most serious consequences.

HHC has immunized hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in recent years, and is dedicated to protecting the most vulnerable New Yorkers against the flu. Those without health insurance receive the vaccine at no cost at various HHC locations throughout the city.

HHC is coordinating with the NYC Department of Health to make sure the vaccine is available to all New Yorkers who seek it. Visit HHC's flu immunization information page to learn more. Information, updated daily, can also be found on the NYC Health Department web site, nyc.gov/flu.

The data shown here represents all the flu immunizations given in our facilities during the time period shown. Immunizations are given to inpatients in our hospitals and nursing homes, to outpatients in our clinics, and to other New Yorkers through outreach events at various community centers.
