Engine 284/Ladder 149 Celebrates 100 Years

Firefighters from Engine 284/Ladder 149 celebrated a milestone on Apr. 10, 100 years of service in Brooklyn.

“For many, many years, generations of outstanding captains, lieutenants and firefighters have called this firehouse their home,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said. “They built their own traditions here.  And they embraced the traditions of service and bravery this Department has always been known for. With each new generation of Firefighters who walked through those doors, those traditions have lived on.”

Chief of Department Edward Kilduff added, “This firehouse has withstood the test of time because of the pride of these firefighters. There are so many people here who share in the legacy.

Hundreds of members past and present attended the ceremony at the firehouse in Dyker Heights.

Hundreds of present and past members attended the centennial celebration in Brooklyn.

During the ceremony, a plaque also was dedicated to Christopher Quinn, Engine 284, who died in the line of duty on Nov. 11, 1926.

“This is a day of great pride and celebration,” Firefighter Glenn Sweeney, Ladder 149 said. “With pride and grace the members perform their duties every tour. It is a living testament to those who came before us.”
