The FDNY honored the some of its unsung heroes at FDNY Headquarters on November 18 at the annual Administrative Medals and Awards ceremony.
"This Department remains strong, and proud, because no matter what each individual’s role may be, we are all committed to the same goal, and the same mission; protecting the lives and property of this city’s residents and visitors," said Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano.
In all, fourteen medals and awards were presented to 77 FDNY members for their work individually, or as a team, on projects benefitting the Department.
The prestigious Administration Medal was awarded to a team of civilian and uniformed FDNY members for their work on the Electronic Fireground Accountability System (EFAS). The EFAS system is an application which allows the Incident Commander at a fire to immediately identify the firefighter making an emergency transmission or mayday call. This application saves precious seconds when a firefighter’s life is in danger.

Additional medals and awards were presented to EMS officers for their work creating a medical plan for training to deal with Improvised Explosive Devices in the subway system, and to two Fire Marshals for their work to apprehend a suspect who was indicted for numerous counts of attempted murder, arson and assault.
Chief of Department Edward S. Kilduff spoke of the professionalism, service and pride shown by the honorees, adding "the city knows it can count on us day in and day out because of the people we honor today."
