FDNY Members Save Man Under Train in Brooklyn

Firefighters, paramedics and EMTs worked together again on Feb. 10, to save a man who fell onto the tracks of an A train in Brooklyn.
Members were called to the Grant Avenue subway station at 9:40 p.m.
When Paramedics Juan Cortes and David Kruysman from Station 39 arrived, EMTs and firefighters were already on scene. They said firefighters were beginning to extract the patient and the man's injuries were not yet known.
Bystanders said the man had fallen onto the tracks as the train was approaching, trapping him between the platform and the train.
Paramedic Cortes jumped onto the tracks and spoke with the patient, who was lethargic and disoriented. He found the victim had minor injuries to his legs, so he treated those, started an IV and immobilized the man on a backboard for removal.
He then worked with firefighters, monitoring the man's progress as they pulled him "about two car lengths" to the end of the train and moved him to the platform.
The paramedics continued treatment as they transported him to Brookdale Medical Center in stable condition. The man suffered some head injuries but is expected to recover.
"It feels good that we were able to do a good job and help him in his time of need," Paramedic Cortes said.
