Calling all volunteers!

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano joined representatives from Dunkin' Donuts on Feb. 10 to help recruit volunteers for the 2011 New York World Police and Fire Games (WPFG).

"This is an opportunity for all New Yorkers to show their appreciation for what firefighters and police officers from around the world did to help our city 10 years ago [on Sept. 11]," said Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano.

Outside the quarters of Engine 39 and Ladder 16 in Manhattan, free Cupid's Choice heart-shaped donuts were given to anyone who signed up to be a volunteer for the Games, which will take place from Aug. 26 to Sept. 5, 2011.

Volunteers will work in a number of capacities, from translating to acting as greeters for those coming to New York City from around the world.

"We need everyone to come out and help us thank the world's first responders for all the support they gave us," said FDNY Capt. Joe Brosi, Chief Operating Officer for the WPFG.

The 2011 WPFG will feature police and firefighters from around the world competing in 69 sporting events at 50 different venues in New York City.  Already, 5,000 firefighters and police officers from around the world have signed up to compete. More than 15,000 total athletes from 70 countries are expected to participate.
