Young Adult Internship Program

Apply now for The Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP), an internship program for low income New York City youth ages 16-24. The program begins with a two- to four-week orientation followed by a 12-week paid internship. Once interns have completed their internship, YAIP offers nine months of follow up services to help participants find a permanent job or a vocational educational program.

Out-of-School Youth Program

The Out-of-School Youth Program (OSY) is a year-long program for low income young people between the ages of 16-21 who are not working and not in school. OSY provides services to help youth upgrade their job skills and find permanent work. OSY programs offer occupational skills training in many industries, including construction, food service, tourism, healthcare and retail, as well as assistance with job and college placement, GED preparation and support services.

Apollo Theater Academy

 

The Apollo Theater Academy offers a six-week paid internship providing hands-on training in behind the scenes careers in the performing arts through job assignments at the Apollo Theater, including individual and group projects. Teens gain exposure to professionals in the arts and entertainment industries and focus on community-building, personal and leadership development. Students are considered for the program through an application and interview process; applications will be available on their website beginning May 8 and the deadline is June 10, 2015.

The New York Civil Liberties Union's annual Freedom of Expression contest is a great opportunity for students to speak out about issues affecting them today. The contest asks young people to choose a topic - from freedom of speech to racial justice, immigrants right to LGBTQ rights - and then get creative. Students can win cash prizes and free tickets to the NYCLU's annual benefit concert.

Recipe Rescue

On May 2, DYCD hosted it first annual Recipe Rescue cooking competition. Competitors from our COMPASS afterschool school programs battled in two categories: sweet and savory. After a busy morning of cooking the top chefs were: second grader Joselyn Zhinin from Sports and Arts Foundation/PS 376 in the sweet category, and seventh grader Kelfry Veato from Bell Foundation/M247 in the savory category.

NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy

The New York City Police Department seeks to provide innovative and effective programs for the City’s young people. The Community Affairs Bureau, Youth Police Academy, is such a program. It is designed to establish a positive relationship between the Police Department and the City’s youth.

Year Up is a one year, intensive training program that provides low income young adults, ages 18-24, with a combination of hands-on skill development, college credits and corporate internships.

#MyVoiceNYC Poetry Contest

All participants in the DYCD #MyVoiceNYC Poetry Contest must submit a completed Entry Form. To complete your entry, you must also post your video to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram using the hashtag #MyVoiceNYC. Don't forget to tell your afterschool or community center staff that you've entered the contest! You can also ask them for help to complete the form.
