Alternate Side Parking

The City suspends alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations, for both street cleaning purposes and traffic flow, on the 34 legal and religious holidays listed below. This includes suspension of street cleaning regulations at metered spaces. This policy is implemented jointly by the Department of Transportation,the Department of Sanitation, and the Police Department. On major legal holidays, No Stopping, No Standing, and No Parking regulations are suspended, except where those regulations are normally in effect seven days a week. On all other holidays, only Street Cleaning Rules are suspended. All other regulations remain in effect. Parking meter regulations will be suspended on major legal holidays.

Emergency Suspensions of Alternate Side Parking Regulations

Alternate Side Parking Regulations may be changed from time to time because of snow emergencies, inclement weather conditions or other emergencies. In these circumstances, the information is provided to the news media. Call the New York City Call Center, 311, to obtain information on emergency suspensions of the regulations.

Temporary Suspensions of Street Cleaning Regulations

Street Cleaning Regulations (SCR) may be suspended temporarily in parts of the City in order to post new regulations. This program is a cooperative Department of Transportation/Department of Sanitation effort to change existing street cleaning rules, as well as to replace missing or damaged parking signage.

When the Department of Sanitation makes a determination to change street cleaning rules in an affected area, the regulations are suspended temporarily to allow the Department of Transportation to post new signs describing the new rules. This suspension does not affect other parking rules which are not Street Cleaning Regulations.

When the posting of new signage is completed, the Department of Sanitation provides a weeklong orientation period during which its crews clean the streets according to the newly posted schedule but do not issue summonses. At the conclusion of the orientation period, enforcement of the new rules takes effect.

On major legal holidays, stopping, standing, and parking are permitted, except in areas where stopping, standing, and parking rules are in effect 7 days a week (for example, "No Standing Anytime"). However, parking meters will not be in effect on major legal holidays.
