What is Trash

Items that cannot be recycled, reused or donated should be discarded as trash.

This includes:

  • Wooden furniture and any items made of wood
  • Tanglers: (cables, wires, extension cords, string lights, garden hoses, window blinds)
  • Hardcover books
  • Cassettes, VHS tapes, and CDs
  • Soft tissues and paper towels
  • Dog waste and kitty litter
  • Glass windows
  • Dishes and drinking glasses
  • Film plastics (plastic wrap, bubble wrap, bags)
  • Foam products
  • Diapers and feminine hygiene products
  • Tubes and pouches
  • Textiles

Setting Out Trash

Residential buildings of any size (single-family and multi-unit) have two options:

  • Place trash out after 6:00 PM in a bin of 55 gallons or less with a secure lid, or
  • Place trash out after 8:00 PM, if putting bags directly on the curb

To ensure collection, all waste must be set out by midnight.

Download or order free decals and signage for your trash bins and storage areas.

NOTE: Beginning in fall 2024, residential buildings with 1-9 units will be required to set out all trash in containers with secure lids at the curb for collection. This new rule will bring New York City in line with other global leaders that have moved their waste into containers.

Bins should be stored inside or in alleyways, courtyards, or other outdoor areas away from public sidewalks. If space is not available, you may store bins within three feet of your building. Containers must be kept neat and allow for pedestrian travel. Enclosures on the sidewalk are subject to NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

Large Items

A large item (also known as bulk) is something that is too large to fit into a bin or bag. NYC residents can get free curbside removal of large items.
