Our Work

The NYC Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes (OPHC) leads the City’s comprehensive, community-centered strategy to prevent and respond to bias-motivated incidents and hate crimes. Rooted in collaboration, education, and proactive engagement, OPHC brings together city agencies, community partners, youth leaders, and interfaith networks to strengthen safety, trust, and resilience across all five boroughs.

At the core of our work is a holistic prevention model that integrates education, early intervention, and coordinated response. We provide students, community members, educators, law enforcement, government officials, and media partners with training and resources that deepen understanding of hate crimes, build cultural awareness, and promote safe reporting. Through our strong partnerships with community-based organizations, supported by initiatives such as Partners Against the Hate (PATH) and the Hate Crime Prevention Innovation Grants, we elevate the expertise of trusted local leaders who play a vital role in prevention, healing, and community empowerment.

OPHC also convenes and coordinates the NYC Interagency Committee on Hate Crimes, guiding citywide strategies that strengthen response systems, information sharing, and survivor support. Our Violent Hate Crime Notification System alerts more than 500 elected officials, community leaders, and community-based partners whenever the NYPD determines that a violent hate crime has occurred, ensuring rapid communication and targeted outreach.

Across the city, our initiatives create long-term foundations for unity and belonging. Programs including Breaking Bread, Building Bonds, HeARTwork Against Hate, Youth Moving Forward Against Hate, Women Forward NYC, the OPHC Interfaith Council, the Youth Ambassador Leadership Program, and community project grants empower residents to lead dialogue, foster understanding, and champion inclusion.

Our work reflects a simple but powerful commitment: every New Yorker deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported. By strengthening partnerships, expanding education, and responding with compassion and coordination, OPHC equips communities and institutions to stand firmly against hate and to build a city where diversity is celebrated and every individual can thrive.
