Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program

OPA is not associated with the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF), but as a current or former employee of the City of New York you should be aware of the program and its benefits.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while you are working full-time for a qualifying employer. Working as a full-time employee for the City of New York most likely qualifies you for this program. Qualifying and enrolling in this program with the correct repayment plan may result in eliminating the entire remaining balance of your student loans (Direct Loans) after 120 qualifying payments. If you have federal student loans, use the U.S. Department of Education’s Help Tool to determine your eligibility. The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection has developed a PSLF Program FAQ.

Current and former City of New York employees must certify their employment as part of their acceptance into the PSLF Program, the TEPSLF Program, and the "limited PSLF waiver." Current employees should send their employment certification form to their human resource department. Current employees can also email their employment certification form to DCAS. Current employees with multiple agencies, or who have had a break in their City service and therefore have two NYC employment forms, can contact their current human resource department or DCAS to sign the employment certification forms for them.
