Science Serving Justice

The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) serves public health and the criminal justice system through forensic science. Our independent investigations of deaths and analysis of evidence provide answers to families and communities during the most challenging of times.

With approximately 600 employees working throughout the five boroughs, OCME is the largest medical examiner's office in the country. Our experts investigate approximately 8,500 deaths per year in New York City, and test tens of thousands of items of evidence in our laboratories. The results of our work inform legal proceedings, shape public health policy, and help families settle their affairs.

Established in 1918, OCME brings a history of leadership in forensic science. We have trained more forensic pathologists than any other jurisdiction, and nearly a century ago, founded the first toxicology and serology laboratories in the nation. Our DNA crime laboratory is the largest such public laboratory in the world, and we operate the only molecular genetics laboratory housed in a medical examiner's office in the country. OCME also maintains a specialized mass fatality management team that is regularly asked to share its expertise in responding to disasters with other jurisdictions.
