Chief of Department Michael J. LiPetri joined the New York City Police Department in February 1994 and began his career on patrol in the 73 Precinct. He also served in the 73, 79, 83 Precincts; the Gang Division; Patrol Borough Brooklyn North; Narcotics Borough Brooklyn South; Narcotics Borough Brooklyn North; and Narcotics Borough Manhattan North. He was promoted to Detective in January 2000; Sergeant in May 2000; Lieutenant in November 2003; Captain in December 2006; Deputy Inspector in May 2011; and Inspector in June 2014. He previously served as the Commanding Officer of Transit District 32, 101, 79, and 75 Precincts.
Chief LiPetri was promoted to Deputy Chief in September 2016 and Assistant Chief in May 2018. He served as Commanding Officer of the Office of the Chief of Department, where he led the Department’s CeaseFire and CrewStat efforts and played a central role in the CompStat process.
In December 2019, Chief LiPetri was promoted to Bureau Chief of Crime Control Strategies. As the Chief of Crime Control Strategies, Chief LiPetri was responsible for the design and implementation of the NYPD’s precision policing plan that resulted in record drops in shooting incidents and victims citywide. He chaired Compstat Meetings with the Chief of Department and oversaw all crime control strategies for the New York City Police Department.
In October 2025, Chief LiPetri was promoted to interim Chief of Department.
Chief LiPetri has earned a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Excelsior College, as well as a 2013 graduate of the Police Management Institute at Columbia University. He is also a 2004 graduate of the 216th FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Chief LiPetri has completed the International Collaboration of Policing Masterclass with Police Scotland International Academy.
