Each resident has access to convenient trash disposal right on their floor. These trash chutes are old, and weren’t designed for the size of today’s trash. Use smaller trash bags, or throw out your trash more often when it’s less full, to ensure your trash goes down the chute all of the way. This small act helps your family, friends, and neighbors to have a clean place to call home.

Enlarged trash chute doors
NYCHA buildings are old and weren't designed for the size of today's trash. To alleviate this issue, NYCHA is in the process of installing bigger trash chutes on the first/ground floor at several developments. If you live in one of the below developments, you can put your larger trash bags in the enlarged trash chute on the ground floor:

Please do not put these items down the chute!
Help NYCHA keep the chutes usable for everyone! Use the chute to get rid of your trash, but never throw the following items down:
Flammable items
Batteries or items that contain batteries
Recyclables – paper, flattened cardboard, glass, plastic, or metal containers
Any item that is too large to fit in the chute
Other hazardous items – appliances: air conditioners and dehumidifiers, electronic equipment: computers and TVs, cell phones, etc.
Tossing these items down the chute can create maintenance and, more importantly, safety issues. The chutes will remain operational and keep NYCHA staff out of harm's way by only tossing the accepted items!
How to dispose of prohibited items
Flammable items – check the product label. Does it say: "causes burns on contact," "vapors harmful," or "extremely flammable"? If it does, stop! Don't use the trash chute. Double bag the item and throw it out in one of the outdoor trash bins. Click here to find out more.
Batteries – it's illegal to place batteries in trash or recycling. It can cause fires and potentially hurt the people who manage the waste. Click here to find out how to dispose of your batteries.
Recyclables – recycle using the blue and green bins at your development! Click here to find out more.
Large Items – disposal will vary by development. Contact your Property Manager to ask about preferred locations and times for large-item disposal so items don't pile up outside.
Also, did you know there are options to recycle large items and mattresses through local programs? Click here to find out more.
Other Hazardous Materials – multiple items are dangerous when not properly disposed of. These items can be recycled, donated, or sold. Click here to find out more.
