50th Anniversary Performance Celebrates NYC Roots of Hip Hop

NEW YORK, February 6, 2023 - The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment congratulates the New York City winners and nominees honored at the 65th annual GRAMMY Awards, held Sunday night and hosted by Trevor Noah. One of the night's biggest winners was Bronx-born Samara Joy who took home GRAMMY awards for Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album. Additionally, the New York Youth Symphony made history as the first youth orchestra to ever win a GRAMMY, in the category of Best Orchestral Performance.

In honor of its ongoing 50th anniversary celebration some of Hip Hop's most iconic voices gathered to perform a special tribute, which acknowledged the Bronx as the original birthplace of the genre. MCed by NYC's own LL Cool J, the performance featured NYC artists Questlove, Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Mele Mel, Method Man, Rahiem, Run-DMC, Salt-N-Pepa with DJ Spinderella, and Swizz Beatz.

NYC was well represented throughout the night, as Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B and Billy Crystal all took the stage as presenters, while Mary J. Blige performed her nominated song “Good Morning, Gorgeous” and Jay-Z joined an ensemble group to perform the nominated song “God Did.” During the GRAMMY Premiere Ceremony, Brooklyn's Arooj Aftab performed, as well as the night's big winner, Samara Joy.

"Music's biggest night was a big night for NYC music! Congratulations to our NYC talent honored with GRAMMY awards and nominations this year, and to the Recording Academy on last night's epic celebration," said Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment Anne del Castillo. "From the star-studded celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop's birth in NYC, to the Best New Artist win for Bronx-born Jazz singer Samara Joy, to the history-making win for New York Youth Symphony, this year's GRAMMYS reminds the world that NYC will always be a global music capital."
