M/WBE Resources

Small Business Services

Getting certified as an M/WBE is the first step toward making the City - a potential buyer - aware that you are a minority and/or woman-owned business. The Department of Small Business Services (SBS) is responsible for certifying qualified businesses as M/WBEs. Interested businesses must apply for certification directly with SBS' Certification Unit. The certification process is easy and free of charge.

M/WBE certification offers many benefits. Businesses that successfully certify as M/WBEs with the City are included in the City's Online Directory of Certified Business, the go-to resource for promoting NYC M/WBEs to public and private sector buyers. Certified businesses also obtain updates about City contracting opportunities, as well as targeted information about:

  • Networking aimed at boosting M/WBEs' visibility and access to the marketplace
  • Assistance with accessing other government certifications, vendor enrollment, and State and Federal procurement opportunities
  • Access to financing and grants to perform on projects, invest in staff development, and build your business
  • Executive business management education programs to help participants develop strategic plans for growth
  • A range of business courses covering business planning, marketing, selling to government, and more
