Message from the Commissioner

Welcome to the website of the New York City Department of Investigation (DOI), the City's independent anti-corruption agency and one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country. 

There is no other agency quite like DOI.

Our work helps to ensure New Yorkers have the honest government they deserve. Our investigations expose and stop corruption, waste, and fraud, and we seek to prevent future misconduct by proposing policy and procedural changes to address the institutional vulnerabilities we uncover.  Our public reports provide transparency as to our investigative findings and convey our recommendations for necessary changes in City government operations. 

DOI has a broad mandate and is supported by numerous statutes that strengthen its investigatory powers and provide it with independence.  Its jurisdiction extends to any agency, officer, elected official or employee of the City, as well as those who do business with or receive benefits from the City. DOI's work covers a wide range of corruption-related issues, from construction fatalities and jail-safety probes to theft of City funds, submission of fraudulent documents, and deficient City procedures and operations, among many others. DOI partners with state and federal prosecutors as well as other law enforcement agencies on the investigations we conduct.

DOI’s investigations can result in criminal prosecutions, civil and administrative actions, and recommendations to remedy corruption vulnerabilities and improve City operations. We keep the public informed about DOI's work through the press releases posted to this website concerning arrests we make and the public reports we issue, as well as our policy and procedure recommendations. 

While DOI’s work necessarily reveals wrongdoing, or identifies weaknesses in existing policies and procedures, our efforts to root out those who engage in corruption and abuse, without fear or favor, and to prevent future misconduct, instill confidence in City government, and in the vast majority of City employees who serve New Yorkers every day with dedication and integrity. Our mission cannot succeed without the public's participation. City employees and members of the public are often our most valuable source of information – our eyes and ears throughout the City.
