DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION LAUNCHES NEW WEB FORM FOR LEFTOVER COMMISSARY FUNDS

In continued efforts to increase transparency, the Department of Correction has launched a new web form where formerly incarcerated individuals can easily check their leftover commissary balance. The web form is located on the Department’s website and is quickly accessible on the home page. The new page not only includes a web form but also has detailed instructions on how formerly incarcerated individuals can claim their leftover balance.

Although the leftover commissary balance for each individual is typically small, since 1997, the Department has accumulated over $4 million in leftover commissary funds that have not been claimed by formerly incarcerated individuals.

“Our goal is to ensure that individuals leaving our custody can easily access their unused funds which will help them reintegrate back into their communities,” said DOC Commissioner Louis A. Molina. “This new process will allow justice involved individuals to inquire about and retrieve their leftover balances more efficiently.”

The portal can be found on the Department’s website here: https://www.nyc.gov/site/doc/inmate-info/claiming-institutional-funds.page

Commissary reports are also available on the Department’s website here: https://www.nyc.gov/site/doc/about/commissary-reports.page
