On Friday October 6, 2017, the NYC Department of Design and Construction participated in a Civil Engineering Information Session for High School Students at Columbia University. Approximately 75 students and teachers from Bayside High School and the HS for Environmental Studies attended the information session to learn about professional and educational opportunities for students interested in engineering.
DDC STEAM Initiatives and Infrastructure Division staff shared information on the agency and internship and mentorship programs available to students. STEAM Initiatives Deputy Director Sandrine Fermino introduced the High School Summer Internship Program and DDC’s ACE Mentor Program Team 8, the two main portals of entry for high school students interested in fields of architecture, engineering, construction management, business administration, finance, and other careers in the built environment. These programs give students the opportunity to work directly with built environment professionals and learn about how they can contribute to the agency’s goal of building an equitable, resilient, and sustainable city for future generations. Students pursuing a Bachelors and/or Master’s Degree can apply for the agency’s College Internship Program and College Aide positions where they can receive hands-on technical experience through specific field assignments and a mentoring relationship with senior-level technical staff.
DDC Infrastructure Division Design 1 Director Thomas Leung reiterated the importance of seeking and applying for internship programs within DDC, as they provide students with the opportunity to not only work alongside licensed professionals, but also to see how their own work is applicable and essential to the operations of a city agency. Thomas highlighted a computer program database the Infrastructure Division is currently utilizing to calculate a type of project estimations that was developed by 2015 High School intern, Leon Cheng. With Leon’s program database, Thomas’s team was able to significantly decrease the time it takes to complete the project estimation from six months to a few hours.
