DDC STEAM Initiatives and PS 119 create a Literary banner for Glendale Library

On June 16th, 2017 PS/IS 119Q The Glendale hosted the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Steam Initiatives Division along with two DDC Architects to talk about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Architecture, and Mathematics) and the role of STEAM in the construction of the newly renovated Glendale Library.

DDC Commissioner Feniosky Peña-Mora and District 30 Council Member Elizabeth Crowley greeted students and shared their insights on what it takes to pursue STEAM careers. The students met Program Director Owen Foote, and Jr. Project Manager Shaima Rizvi the two DDC staff members responsible for managing the renovation of the Glendale Library. The panelists spoke about their educational backgrounds and the process of managing a construction project.

DDC STEAM Program Coordinators Anthony Martin, Tatiana Vargas, Teresa Ye, and Monique Jacob also spoke with students about the importance of pursuing careers in STEAM and discussed what they need to study to prepare for STEAM educational opportunities, internships, and ultimately future careers at DDC.

The students created a banner that allowed each to answer the question, “What does the Glendale Library mean to you?” They created individual book covers, and collaged them onto a DDC Bookcase Literary Banner for the Library.
