DDC STEAM Initiatives Participates in LIC Spring!

On May 14th, 2016 the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Community Partnerships and STEAM Initiatives participated in the second annual LIC Springs! The free community block festival, hosted by the LIC Partnership, featuring family-friendly activities including dance, theater performances, interactive lessons, art & sculpture-making, fitness classes, outdoor dining, and sports games.

DDC STEAM Initiatives team members including Sandrine Fermino, Jillian Ramos, Anthony Martin, and Tatiana Vargas spoke to families about DDC’s STEAM Initiatives and the agency’s goal of establishing a diverse and inclusive pipeline into fields such as architecture, engineering, and construction for the City’s youth in underserved communities. Coordinators distributed information about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture, and Mathematics) education and how parents can help prepare their children for futures in these fields. Children as young as 2 years-old participated in DDC’s “Wheel of STEAM,” where they answered questions STEAM-related questions to win a DDC prize. Children also helped paint our mural to celebrate the festivities. Upwards of eight-thousand people were in attendance and approximately 500 children participated in our activities.
