The $54.8 million infrastructure project in Queens Village is part of the overall $2.5 billion program to improve street conditions and alleviate flooding throughout southeast Queens

Work occurred on 70 individual blocks throughout Queens Village. Approximately 1,500 feet of storm sewers were replaced, ranging from 12-inches to 30-inches in diameter. To better capture stormwater and direct it to the new sewers, 51 old catch basins were replaced. During construction, more than one mile (7,200 feet) of 10 and 12-inch sanitary sewers were replaced. To ensure that the City has access to the sewers, 77 new manholes were installed.

To improve water infrastructure reliability, nearly four miles (19,500 feet) of water mains were replaced and almost two miles (9,300) feet of water mains were added to the neighborhood, both ranging between 6-inches to 48-inches in diameter. To ensure that the FDNY has access to the City’s water supply during emergencies, 78 fire hydrants were replaced and 11 new ones were added.

pedestrian ramps and paved roadway

Compliance with the American with Disabilities Act was improved with the replacement of 140 pedestrian ramps throughout the project area

As part of the final street restoration, 189,000 square feet of roadway were resurfaced and 207,000 square feet of roadway, 53,000 square feet of sidewalk and 8,300 feet of curbs were reconstructed. The new curbs and sidewalks were graded to help guide stormwater to the area’s new catch basins to ensure adequate street drainage during storms. The project brought 12 bus pads to Braddock Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard. Compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) was improved with the replacement of 140 pedestrian ramps.

The project was designed by DDC’s in-house team. Construction was completed by DiFazio Industries and engineering services were provided by HNTB.
