DDC Accepting Applications for High School and College/Graduate Summer Internship Programs

Long Island City, NY –  The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) continues to accept applications for its 2019 High School and College/Graduate Summer Internship programs. Students interested in the High School Summer Internship Program should submit their application and supporting materials by March 4. Applications and materials will be accepted for the College and Graduate Summer Internship Program until March 15. All DDC internships are paid positions.

DDC’s College and Graduate Summer Internship Program gives a select group of students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the architecture, engineering, design, and construction management professions within a public service context. Through specific field assignments and a mentoring relationship with senior-level DDC staff, students will gain hands-on technical experience and firsthand knowledge of construction management. Last year’s college/graduate interns took numerous field trips to DDC project locations and participated in a Community Day where they worked on several beautification and clean-up projects.

Forty-five students will be selected majoring in engineering, architecture, construction management, urban planning and/or sustainability design. During the 11-week internship, students will learn about the challenges of upgrading and constructing the City’s public buildings and infrastructure and will participate in numerous seminars, site visits and job training opportunities. Students must be entering either sophomore, junior, senior or 5th year of college or already be in graduate school.

The High School Summer Internship Program is organized in partnership with the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development. The six-week program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in architecture, engineering, building trades, public administration, business administration or information technology, and is a unique opportunity to prepare students for the growing demands of the job market and to learn about what it takes to build in New York City.

The 40 students selected must be in high school and be at least 16 years of age. Candidates may be 14 and 15 if they have previously participated in DDC programs or workshop events.

DDC student internship programs are conducted in conjunction with DDC’s STEAM education initiative, established in 2014 to create a diverse and inclusive pipeline for New York City's youth to engage in the architecture, construction and engineering industries. DDC STEAM has served more than 3,120 students since its inception. Most recent high school interns took part in a new Virtual Reality (VR) workshop series where they worked collaboratively to create a culminating VR project focusing on community development.
