New Municipal Parking Lot Opens at Queens Borough Hall

Long Island City, NY – Acting Commissioner Ana Barrio of the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced today that the new municipal parking lot at Queens Borough Hall has opened, following a $8.8 million construction project by DDC for the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT).
Bounded by 126th Street, 132nd Street, 82nd Avenue and the Grand Central Parkway, the new environmentally efficient lot introduces more than 300 parking spaces to the area, with easy access to Queens County Criminal Court, Queens Borough Hall and the new Helen Marshall Cultural Center, which DDC also completed in 2016.
“With advanced stormwater management, plus bike parking, electric vehicle charging and ample green space, the new parking lot at Queens Borough Hall adheres to DDC guidelines for sustainability and environmental efficiency,” said Acting Commissioner Barrio. “We’re very pleased to help bring vital improvements to the Queens civic center.”
The new lot provides 302 parking spaces in an area of about 110,000 square feet, including six ADA spaces, one van accessible ADA space, seven motorcycle spaces and four electric vehicle charging stations. State-of-the-art amenities include new stormwater management and sewer systems, plus rain gardens that are expected to divert over 100,000 gallons a year of stormwater away from the local sewer system.
The lot also features sitting areas, bike parking, ADA ramp access, energy efficient LED lighting, and new security fencing and retaining walls. Creative landscaping will be extensively planted, introducing over 120 species of plants and trees to the area, when weather allows.
The lot was formerly occupied by a four story parking garage, built in 1963 and demolished in 2014 because of structural concerns. Tully Construction was the contractor for the project and WXY Studios was the design consultant.
