New York City Department of Design and Construction’s STEAM Initiative, in Partnership with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the NYC Administration for Children’s Services, Presents the 2016 High School Internship

Long Island City—New York City Department of Design and Construction’s (DDC) STEAM education initiative, in conjunction with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), will select 30 students from public and private high schools across the five boroughs to participate in a summer internship program that will provide the neophytes a chance to work in the fields of architecture, engineering, construction, design, law, business administration, and finance from the perspective of the public sector.

Each intern will be assigned to a personal mentor in a specific division. Assignments will be available in divisions including administration, architecture & engineering, community partnerships and STEAM initiatives, infrastructure, office of the chief architect, law/general counsel’s office, program management and public buildings. Work in these areas may include the use of Auto-CAD and REVIT drafting for students interested in architecture or engineering, internet research, word processing, spreadsheet creation, and other clerical work.

“Our last class of interns left a positive impression on us at the DDC,” said DDC Community Partnerships & STEAM Initiatives Deputy Commissioner Lee Llambelis. “We witnessed them grow in a variety of ways, from learning how to draw blueprints, to becoming adept at Excel, to developing networking skills, and we’re extremely excited to see what the next batch of interns can learn from their experience in the department.”

Last year’s internship program provided students with an opportunity to design models using a 3-D printer. Additionally, students attended weekly workshops at Stuyvesant High School at which they experienced presentations on a variety of topics including resume preparation, the college admission and application process, leadership development, and career information. Interns also went on field trips to active DDC project sites and witnessed firsthand how New York City’s public spaces go from drawing board to physical construction. The internship capped off with a community service day at Midland Beach in Staten Island, which focused on beautifying the gardens surrounding the beach after they were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Applications for the internship will be accepted until the April 15th deadline. Applicants must reside in New York City and must be at least 16 years of age. Interns are compensated by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).
