Ribbon Cutting: Greenpoint EMS Station

The growing neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn, just got even safer. On Monday, September 30, DDC’s Deputy Commissioner for Public Buildings, David Resnick, and other DDC team members joined FDNY Commissioner Salvatore Cassano at a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the start of operations at the new EMS Station 35 on Metropolitan Avenue, near Roebling Street. The station is a two-story, 12,900-square-foot facility that can house four ambulances and an EMS command vehicle. One new, environmentally-friendly ambulance is already operating from the station, and several more are on the way.
 
Michielli + Wyetzner Architects designed the new facility, whose two-story façade lends a civic presence to the street while remaining in context with the low-rise character of the neighborhood. The station’s exterior features a glass curtain wall with a honeycomb-patterned inner layer that allows light into the building while providing privacy for on duty staff. Perhaps the station’s most vivid design elements are its large, red front doors–the iconic symbol of FDNY facilities throughout the city.
 
“Since 1996, DDC has helped build or renovate 21 EMS buildings. The newest addition to this portfolio, EMS Station 35, is an iconic building that delivers on all counts. The structure is open to the community, provides a dignified place to work, and, most significantly, supports the lifesaving work of our city’s emergency medical professionals,” said Deputy Commissioner Resnick.
 
“As call volume for medical emergencies has continued to grow, including a record-setting 1.3 million calls in 2012, the Department has worked to increase the number of our EMS stations in an effort to further lower response times and position resources where they are most needed,” said Commissioner Cassano. “Station 35 is the tenth new EMS Station opened by the Department since 2002 and serves to demonstrate the Department’s unwavering commitment to provide the high standard of emergency pre-hospital care that New York City residents deserve.”
