Ground Breaking: Queens Museum of Art

April 12, 2011

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Commissioner Burney were among hundreds of people from the civic and arts communities who gathered on April 12 for a ceremonial ground-breaking to celebrate the expansion of the Queens Museum of Art. The expanded Museum will take over the old ice skating facility and double its size to 105,000 square feet. This will enable QMA to expand its collections, exhibit, and program spaces.

"On behalf of the Board, the staff and most importantly the audience of the Queens Museum of Art, we are grateful to everyone who made this project a reality." said Tom Finkelpearl, Executive Director of the Queens Museum of Art.

A day-lit large works gallery, skylights, multi-purpose space, park side cafe, expanded education classrooms, retail shops, new east and west side entries and a new signature stair and bridge will enhance the visitor experience. There also will be an eye-catching western facade facing the Grand Central Parkway that solidifies the museum's presence in the park and creates a bold visual identity to those passing by on the roadway.
