Ground Breaking: A.R.T. / New York Theatres

December 12, 2013

At a ground breaking ceremony on the west side of Manhattan, the City took its first step in ensuring non-profit theater groups have access to affordable performance space. Hosted by actress Cherry Jones, the event celebrated the forthcoming home of the A.R.T./New York Theatres, a leading service and advocacy organization for the City’s more than 375 non-profit theatres. The complex will include a 99- and 150-seat theatre with audio-visual and technical systems.

“We’re delighted to celebrate the A.R.T./New York Theatres and offer a sneak preview of the new theatre spaces that will soon be on the way for off and off Broadway productions, which are the lifeblood of New York’s theater community,” said DDC Commissioner David Burney. “The terrific design for the new venues, by Toshiko Mori Architects, is a product of our Design and Construction Excellence program…We look forward to working with our partners at the Department of Cultural Affairs and A.R.T./New York to build these exciting new spaces for live theatre.”
