Ground Breaking: 122 Community Center

November 20, 2013

In Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the 122 Community Center provides public access to health initiatives and the arts. After more than 35 years in operation, the building that houses 122CC is in need of an upgrade to better serve the 65,000 patrons that use the Center every year. After the completion of a façade renovation during Phase I, the Center celebrated the start of Phase 2 with a lively ground breaking ceremony attended by community leaders, Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin and DDC Commissioner David Burney.

122CC is housed in the former home of Public School 122, a building designed by C.B.J. Snyder. The renovation will bring the building up to code, establish a new public entryway and upgraded theaters, studios and shared spaces to foster creative collaboration. “We are thrilled to have managed the design process with Deborah Berke Partners,” said DDC Commissioner Burney. “This award-winning design will expand programming capacity for the tenant organizations and bring an extraordinary 19th century structure into compliance with modern codes. We look forward to working with the contractors to complete these renovations on time and within budget.”
