The New York City Public Service Corps (PSC) is the nation's first and largest off-campus internship program offering paid and academic credit undergrad and graduate internships. These internships are contemporary and authentic resume-builders that guide students’ careers and access to City agency employment.

Established in 1966, the program has strong private and institutional partnerships with the Federal Work-Study program. PSC partnerships include more than 100 colleges, 100,000 student alumni, with current intern placement for more than 250 students with need annually, and with the highest number of civil service alumni.

The PSC also participates in America Reads a national initiative to help children read well in the early grades.

The PSC offers two types of internships to undergraduate and graduate students:

Work-Study Internships

  • Public Service Corps Work-Study students receive an hourly wage. The hourly rates range from $15.50 – $19.90. For more information view our PSC Work-Study Wage Information.
  • Interns may work full-time during the summer and during school breaks (40 hours per week) and part-time during the academic year (20 hours per week).

Academic Credit Internships

  • Academic Credit Internships are available to students seeking work-related experience in their area of study. The program operates year-round, offering a limited number of credit-bearing positions in City government. If you wish to claim credit for the internship, you must have prior approval from your faculty advisor. Public Service Corps staff will assist you in completing the required paperwork. Participating students are expected to abide by all the regulations covering Public Service Corps interns receiving stipends. The minimum time commitment is 10 hours per week. However, most agencies prefer at least 15-20 hours per week during the academic year. All credit bearing internships must be pre-approved by the student's academic department and must be supported with appropriate documentation of matriculation and registration.
  • Applications are available only through the PSC office.

Applying to the Public Service Corps

To be eligible for a paid internship, students must qualify for a Federal Work-Study Program financial aid grant. Applications are available from financial aid officers, work-study coordinators, career placement counselors, or employment officers at participating colleges, universities, and law schools. Eligible students should consult their financial aid office to determine whether or not their institution is affiliated with the Public Service Corps. Applications for Academic Credit internships are only available through the PSC office.
