What Salon Owners Need to Know:

  • The New York State Department of Labor enforces labor laws in the State, including the payment of the minimum wage.

  • Federal law requires that employers provide protection against workplace hazards for their employees.

  • The New York City Department of Consumer Affairs enforces the City’s Paid Safe and Sick Leave Law.

  • New York City’s Paid Safe and Sick Leave Law requires employers to provide leave so employees can care for themselves or their families, regardless of their immigration status. If you have 5 or more employees, you must provide paid leave. If you have 1-4 employees, you must also provide leave and this leave can be unpaid.   • It is illegal to retaliate against employees who exercise their rights under the Paid Safe and Sick Leave Law. If it is determined that you retaliated against an employee, you may be responsible for lost wages and benefits, fines, and may have to rehire an employee who has been unlawfully terminated.

  • New York City’s Paid Safe and Sick Leave law covers most employees, including those who are undocumented.
