Mayor de Blasio, Chancellor Fariña and Deputy Mayor Buery Announce 69 New Community Schools

Mayor Bill de Blasio, Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña and Deputy Mayor Richard Buery today announced the expansion of the Community Schools Initiative by 69 new schools this September, providing students with expanded learning opportunities, robust family engagement, an explicit focus on social-emotional development, and enrichment programming through partnerships with community based organizations (CBOs). A total of 215 Community Schools will serve over 108,000 students across the city.

Chancellor Carmen Fariña and Operation Warm today announced a partnership that will provide 13,000 elementary school students in Community Schools with brand-new winter jackets. All 32 Community Schools serving students in grades Pre-K-5, 20 of which are part of the School Renewal Program, will receive winter coats. The selected schools serve large populations of low-income students or students in temporary housing.
