Multiple Dwellings Inspection Unit

When a member of DOB’s Multiple Dwellings Inspection Unit (MDI) inspects your building, far more than violations of the NYC Building Code are investigated. The Unit oversees various investigative and enforcement initiatives as well as coordinates DOB investigative efforts on major cases.

MDI’s mandate involves the stopping of construction-related tenant harassment, the regulation and investigation of unlicensed and illegal trade activity for trades requiring licensure or registration by the Department, and non-permitted construction that includes property owners/landlords, contractors, and developers.

Unit functions and responsibilities include:

  • conduct investigations and audits of DOB-approved training course providers to ensure compliance with Site Safety Training regulations
  • performing Tenant Protection Plan compliance inspections and the identification, investigation and documentation of construction-related tenant harassment complaints
  • representing the Department on the Tenant Harassment Prevention Task Force that operates in conjunction with other City and State agencies to investigate unscrupulous property owners
  • provides testimony to law enforcement and prosecutors against property owners.
