The New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) offers students several ways to interact with the Agency and learn from our seasoned professionals.

We offer internships, college aide positions, and numerous academic programs for students interested in various career tracks like architecture, engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical), construction inspection, sustainability, public policy, human resources, facilities management, and government administration.

DOB Scholars Program

The DOB Scholars Program is an in-depth curriculum and career development program for College and Trade School students interested in engineering, architecture, sustainability and energy management, construction management, construction trades, inspection, law enforcement, public policy, government administration, and public safety. 

The program consists of 10 seminars over the course of the spring semester. Each week, DOB architects, engineers, sustainability experts, construction inspectors, and Assistant Commissioners present on the work of their individual units/departments.

Students that participated in our most recent cohort went on to become interns, college aides, and full-time hires. For any student seeking a future career in any of the above-mentioned career paths, the DOB Scholars Program works to expand your professional network, knowledge of relevant areas of study within your given major, and your knowledge of the professional and academic qualifications for jobs within these fields. DOB Youth Leadership Council

Youth Leadership Council is an extra curricular program that provides you the opportunity to learn from Department of Buidings subject matter experts. Join us for indepth seminars and hands-on activities that explore a variety of topics, including construction, architecture and engineering. After these sessions, you and your peers will develop informative group presentations on sustainability,
construction safety, the Building Code, etc.

Career and Technical Education Internships (CTE)

DOB currently provides internship placements for students in CTE high schools. If you are a CTE high school student interested in working with us, reach out to your school's Work-Based Learning coordinator, or contact us at YouthEngagement@buildings.nyc.gov directly for more information.

College Aides & College-Level Internship Positions

College aide positions offer students a flexible, engaging way to gain paid experience over the course of their academic careers.

DOB offers college aide positions across a wide range of units, and a college aide's responsibilities change depending on the unique mission of a given unit. Our interns have worked in various agency units like:
