“The second bill before me is Introductory Number 567-A, sponsored by Council Members Oddo, Cabrera, Dromm, Fidler, Garodnick, Gentile, Mealy, Mendez, Palma, Sanders, Chin, Koslowitz, Van Bramer, Nelson, Rose, Rodriguez, Jackson, Arroyo, Vann, Lappin, Vacca, Brewer, Vallone, Weprin, Levin, Barron, Eugene, Gennaro, Greenfield, Lander, Crowley, Koppell, Mark-Viverito, Recchia, Halloran, Koo, Ulrich, Ignizio and Wills.

“Introductory Number 567-A requires the Department of Transportation to post on its web site information relating to the conditions of New York City streets.

“This legislation requires the Department of Transportation to post on its web site the current rating for City streets, as well as when stretches of those streets were last resurfaced or received capital improvement. By January 31, 2013 the information must be searchable by City block.

“I’ve always said that unless you can measure a problem, you can’t manage it. In that light, the Department of Transportation’s street rating system is a critical tool in our efforts to keep New York City’s street network in a state of good repair. Working with the bill’s sponsor, Minority Leader Oddo, the Department of Transportation has already made available online a map with street rating and paving date information.

“By sharing this data with the broader public, the Department is taking a great step toward empowering New Yorkers to engage in the Department’s great work, and to track their progress in improving the condition of our City’s streets. Thanks to the repaving of more than 1,000 lane miles and the filling of more than 400,000 potholes last fiscal year, 72 percent of all streets boast the Department of Transportation’s highest rating — and through the Department’s efforts, we’re confident that those numbers will continue to improve in the years ahead.

“I would like to thank Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and her staff for their work on this legislation along with my Office of City Legislative Affairs.
