STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON REPORTED RELEASE OF CHINESE ARTIST AI WEIWEI

"Today's reported release of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is cause for optimism, even as many disturbing questions remain about the circumstances surrounding his detainment. At last month's unveiling of his sculpture exhibition, Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads, at the Pulitzer Fountain, we stood in solidarity with the millions of people around the world who were hoping for his release. Freedom of expression - the ability to speak, write, paint and sculpt what you wish - is the most basic of those freedoms. As a former resident with a unique and creative voice, Ai Weiwei's connections to New York City have become even stronger since he lived here, and thousands enjoy his sculpture exhibition daily. Our thoughts are now with him and his family as we await more information about their reunion."
