MAYOR BLOOMBERG ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE 29TH ANNUAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN

Awards Celebrate Highest Design Standards for Public Projects

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, First Deputy Mayor Patricia E. Harris, and Design Commission President James P. Stuckey and Executive Director Jackie Snyder today announced the 11 outstanding public projects that will be honored at the Public Design Commission’s 29th Annual Awards for Excellence in Design. The Design Commission, formerly called the Art Commission, has given awards to exceptional public projects since 1982. The winning projects are selected by the Design Commission from the hundreds of submissions reviewed each year, and they exemplify the highest standards of design. First Deputy Mayor Harris will host the awards ceremony at the recently renovated Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, which is one of the award recipients.

“As new public construction projects go up throughout the five boroughs, we have an opportunity to add innovative elements to the landscape of our City and we make the most of it,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Through the Awards for Excellence in Design we honor outstanding examples of creative design every year, and this year’s winners are no exception. These 11 projects in all five boroughs showcase how public projects can help enhance our City physically while adding to its cultural, civic and recreational life.”

“We created the Awards for Excellence in Design nearly three decades ago to honor public projects that exceed the highest standards of design, and today there are more exceptional projects underway than ever before,” said First Deputy Mayor Harris, who served as Executive Director of the Design Commission (then the Art Commission) during the Koch Administration.

“The projects we honor tonight reflect some of the most interesting design elements in construction today,” said Design Commission President Stuckey. “It is gratifying that so many public projects underway today achieving a high quality of design and adding positively to the look and feel of New York City.”

The Design Commission is New York City’s design review agency. Established in 1898, the Commission reviews permanent works of art, architecture and landscape architecture proposed on or over City-owned property. Projects include new construction, renovation and restoration of buildings, such as museums and libraries; creation and rehabilitation of parks and playgrounds; installation of lighting and other streetscape elements; and design, installation and conservation of artwork. The Design Commission is composed of 11 members, who serve pro bono, and includes an architect, landscape architect, painter and sculptor as well as representatives of the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York Public Library.
