MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION REDUCING SANITATION STREET CLEANING DAYS UPON REQUEST OF COMMUNITY BOARDS WITH HIGH CLEANLINESS RATING

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The first of five bills before me today is Introductory Number 287-A, sponsored by Council Members Lander, Gonzalez, Williams, Rodriguez, James, Koppell, Foster, Vacca, Vallone, Crowley, Nelson, Arroyo, Halloran, Gennaro, Jackson, Greenfield, Rose and Ulrich.  Introductory Number 287-A will give some discretion to individual Community Boards to determine the number of Department of Sanitation street cleaning days in their neighborhoods.

“Throughout the City, there are several community board districts which currently have more than one street cleaning day for each side of the street.  This bill will require the Department of Sanitation, upon the request of the Community Board, to reduce the number of weekly street cleanings in districts that average a ‘90’ or better cleanliness acceptability rating in the Mayor’s Office of Operations scorecard program for two consecutive fiscal years.

“I would like to thank Department of Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty and Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and their staff, along with my Office of City Legislative Affairs for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the City Council for approving this legislation.”
