STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON PRESIDENT OBAMA'S CALL FOR CONGRESS TO FIX NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND

"I applaud President Obama for his continued leadership on education reform and his call for Congress to make key reforms to the No Child Left Behind law before the new school year. If we are going to offer our children a real shot at succeeding in this increasingly competitive world, it has to start with reforming our education systems.

"In New York City, we have implemented many of the reforms the President has proposed, including an accountability system that measures individual student growth, ties teacher effectiveness to student achievement, and ensures we offer better opportunities to our most disadvantaged communities. These reforms have been an essential part of our success in turning around a broken public school system, and I have long believed they should be incorporated into the re-authorization of No Child Left Behind.

"But the same sense of urgency must be impressed upon our state legislatures, which are right now grappling with important policy choices as a result of deep budget challenges. As we confront these issues, at the forefront of our minds must be the fact that our children's future, and our nation's economic security, will depend entirely on our ability to educate a new generation of students. The moment is ripe for change, and it is imperative that we move beyond entrenched interests, and seize this opportunity on behalf of our children."
