"The next bill before me today is Introductory Number 376-A, sponsored by Council Members Vacca, Cabrera , Comrie, Fidler, James, Koslowitz, Palma, Recchia, Rose, Williams, Garodnick, Mealy, Lappin, Koppell, Jackson, Chin, Van Bramer, Halloran, Koo,  Ulrich, Ignizio, Greenfield, Nelson, Rodriguez, Gentile, Levin, Barron, Weprin, Gennaro, Lander, Vallone, and Oddo.  Introductory Number 376-A will require the Department of Transportation to establish guidelines governing the approval and placement of traffic calming devices.

"In recent years, the Department of Transportation has taken great strides to reduce injuries and fatalities on our City's streets and sidewalks.  New York City's overall traffic fatality rate is less than one-third the national rate - and less than half the rate of the next ten largest U.S. cities - and Commissioner Sadik-Khan and her staff continue to pursue smart, evidence-based solutions to safety and traffic challenges across the five boroughs. 

"This legislation will codify into law DOT's current practice of publishing the guidelines they use when installing traffic calming devices.  Sharing these guidelines with the public allows City residents to have a better understanding of how the Department of Transportation is making the City a safer place - and this legislation will ensure that the Department will continue this practice in perpetuity.

"I would like to thank Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and her staff along with my Office of City Legislative Affairs for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the City Council for approving this legislation."
