MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION TO REQUIRE THE CITY'S MY NEIGHBORHOOD STATISTICS WEB SITE TO POST HATE CRIME AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE STATISTICS

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The two bills before me today increase transparency by requiring the posting of hate crime and domestic violence statistics on the City’s My Neighborhood Statistics web site.

“Launched in 2002, My Neighborhood Statistics provides those who visit nyc.gov with a useful snapshot of City quality-of-life data.  The site’s interface allows users to see and download performance information for their own neighborhoods —disaggregated by community district, police precinct, or school district — and  for the City as a whole.

“The first bill before me, Introductory Number 373-A, is sponsored by Speaker Quinn and Council Members Mark-Viverito, Brewer, Cabrera, Chin, Dickens, Dromm, Ferreras, Fidler, Gentile, Greenfield, James, Koppell, Lander, Mealy, Palma, Recchia, Rose, Sanders, Van Bramer, Williams, Lappin, Gennaro, Rodriguez, Jackson, Garodnick, Gonzalez, Barron and Halloran.  This legislation requires the Mayor’s Office of Operations to post on the City’s My Neighborhood Statistics web site statistics regarding the number and type of hate crimes that were reported in the City during the previous fiscal year.

“The second bill, Preconsidered Introductory Number 393, is sponsored by Council Members Mark-Viverito, Jackson, Barron, Chin, Comrie, Fidler, Garodnick, Greenfield, Lander, Lappin, Palma, Sanders, Vann, Williams and Halloran.  Introductory Number 393 requires the Mayor’s Office of Operations to post on the My Neighborhood Statistics web site information relating to domestic violence incidents that were reported in the City during the previous fiscal year.

“I would like to thank Mayor’s Office of Operations Director Liz Weinstein, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, and their staff for their work on this bill along with my Office of City Legislative Affairs.  I would also like to thank the City Council for approving this legislation.”
