STATEMENTS OF MAYOR BLOOMBERG, CHAIRMAN RHEA AND CHANCELLOR KLEIN ON GOLDMAN SACHS' $20 MILLION CONTRIBUTION TO THE PLANNED HARLEM CHILDREN'S ZONE SCHOOL AT THE ST. NICHOLAS HOUSES

Statement of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg:

“President Obama challenged the nation’s housing authorities to pursue neighborhood development plans that integrate housing, schools and community facilities, and that’s exactly what we’re doing at the St. Nicholas Houses in Harlem. Geoffrey Canada and the Harlem Children’s Zone have established a national model for empowering children and providing them with long-term opportunities. By working with the organization to build its next state-of-the-art school and community facility within the New York City Housing Authority complex, we’ll expand that model of success, create needed jobs and revitalize one of our public housing communities. We’ve committed more than $60 million to the project, but without private partners, it could never happen. Thanks to Goldman Sachs’ $20 million contribution, it will.”

Statement of New York City Housing Authority Chairman John B. Rhea:

“The New York City Housing Authority is enthusiastic about the contribution of Goldman Sachs in helping NYCHA and the Harlem Children’s Zone achieve better outcomes for the children and families of St. Nicholas Houses and the surrounding community.  NYCHA has worked closely with St. Nicholas Houses residents and the Harlem Children Zone to ensure the success of this project, including the assurance of admission for all eligible kindergarten-age children. Goldman Sachs, with the support of its employees and financial resources, is a wonderful addition to our team.”

Statement of Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein:

“The Bloomberg Administration has made unprecedented investments in building schools across the City, and public-private partnerships are an important tool that let us get the best bang for our buck. We are building a public school in Harlem for over 1,000 children at a real discount for taxpayers – just the kind of innovative thinking we need in these tough economic times. With this exciting project, we can be sure the Harlem Children’s Zone will be a force for good in our City for years to come.”
