MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION ESTABLISHING NEW EFFICIENCIES AND REVENUES TO HELP BALANCE THE FISCAL YEAR 2011 BUDGET

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

“The first four of five bills before me today help balance the Fiscal Year 2011 budget approved by the Council on June 29th and will help achieve efficiencies and revenues for the City in future years as well.

“Introductory Number 210, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Members Crowley and Halloran, establishes fees for Family Court court-ordered investigations of custody and visitation petitions and the supervision of DWI/DUI offenders.

“Introductory Number 236-A, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Members Vacca, Gentile, and Mealy, authorizes the Taxi & Limousine Commission to charge a fee for the first reinspection of a taxi cab, as it currently does for the initial inspection and second and subsequent reinspections.

“Introductory Number 214-A, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Member Garodnick, applies the E911 surcharge to users of Voice Over Internet Protocol telephones just as is done for landlines and cellular telephones ensuring that everyone pays their fare share for emergency services.

“Introductory Number 23, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Members Recchia, James, Gentile and Seabrook, increases the fee property owners pay to have their elevators inspected to offset new contract costs.

“I would like to thank Department of Probation Commissioner Schiraldi, Taxi & Limousine Commission Chair Yassky, Department of Finance Commissioner Frankel, Department of Buildings Commissioner LiMandri, Office of Management & Budget Director Mark Page and all the agency staff for their work on these bills.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation.”
