MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION CHANGING BENEFITS FOR NEWLY HIRED EMPLOYEES REPRESENTED BY THE UFT

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The first of three bills before me today is Introductory Number 24-A, sponsored at the request of the Administration by Council Members Sanders, James, Seabrook and Ulrich.

"Introductory Number 24-A increases the number of years of credited service from ten to fifteen years that a newly hired employee represented by the United Federation of Teachers will need to work before being eligible to receive retiree health insurance and welfare fund benefits.

"On June 22, 2009, an agreement was reached between the City and the United Federation of Teachers whereby the UFT provided savings to the City through changes in pension, annuity and health insurance benefits.  The pension and tax deferred annuity changes were recently enacted into law by the State, and today, we will be codifying the changes outlined in the health insurance portion of the June agreement.

"I would like to thank Office of Labor Relations Commissioner James Hanley and his staff for working with the United Federation of Teachers on an agreement.  I would also like to thank my Office of City Legislative Affairs and the City Council for approving this legislation."
