STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON LUNAR NEW YEAR

"As our City's second-largest immigrant population, Asian New Yorkers make invaluable contributions to life in our city, and this week's events celebrating Lunar New Year are terrific opportunities to celebrate the vibrant and dynamic culture of this community. Lunar New Year is a chance to celebrate new hope and pay homage to old traditions. This is the Year of the Tiger, symbolizing both unpredictability and deep-rooted sincerity. People born under this sign are known for being passionate advocates and daring problem-solvers - so I can say with out a doubt, our city is full of 'tigers.'  New Yorkers find strength in our incredible diversity, and the Lunar New Year is a great example of how residents of many different nationalities join together to celebrate shared traditions. As red envelopes change hands and lion and dragon dance troupes make their way down parade routes, I want to wish everyone celebrating a Happy New Year."
