MAYOR BLOOMBERG SIGNS LEGISLATION REQUIRING LOCAL REPRESENTATION ON CERTAIN PARK CONSERVANCIES

Remarks by Mayor Bloomberg at a Public Hearing on Local Laws

"The next bill before me is Introductory Number 1083-A, sponsored by Council Members Mark-Viverito, Avella, Jackson, Barron, Dickens, James, Koppell, Lappin, Palma, Sanders, Seabrook, Nelson, Foster, Ferreras, Vann, Mendez, Sears, Liu, White, Arroyo and Rodriguez.  Introductory Number 1083-A requires local representation on certain park conservancies.

"This bill requires that whenever the Parks Department enters into or renews a conservancy agreement for a conservancy with a parks-related mission that has the ability to hire a majority of its staff, there must be one local representative on the board of the conservancy for every Council district within the park and a maximum of two districts that abut the park.  Local representatives shall be designated in consultation with the appropriate Council members.

"I would like to thank Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and his staff for their work on this bill.  I would also like to thank the Council for approving this legislation."
