STATEMENT BY MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE DEATH OF PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTER JAMEL M. SEARS

"Late last night I got word that Probationary Firefighter Jamel Sears died. He was somebody who really made a difference in this City, he was on his way to becoming one of New York's Bravest. He had already served in the Navy to defend this country.  After five months in probie school, on Monday, he collapsed.

"I had visited the hospital on Monday, and visited with his wife Sherita and their two kids as well as his mother Jonnie-Mae. She works for the Housing Authority, his wife is a New York City police officer and she had worked for the Corrections Department. Jamel was somebody who had defended this country overseas, and then devoted his career to public service and keeping us all safe. I know it's going to be extremely tough time for the family.

"I tried to comfort his mother and wife and say he's in God's hands. And I just wanted to ask all New Yorkers to keep him and their family in their prayers. It just reminds us that we have so many people that try to make a difference in this City - Jamel was one of them - and some of them pay a terrible price."
